The Golf GTI is the icon of sporty hatchbacks, and dates back to 1983. VW finally brought the new GTI to the USA, several years after the European launch. A new 2.0L I-4 turbo puts out 200-bhp and 207 lb.-ft., which makes it the most powerful GTI ever. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual or the automatic DSG(TM) gearbox. This is the first GTI with a multi-link independent rear suspension, so handling should be much improved over its predecessors. An aggressive new front fascia with a honeycomb grille shows that the GTI is all business, and distinguishes it from lesser Golfs. Available 18-inch alloy wheels show off the racy red brake calipers. Xenon HID lamps are standard. Interior upgrades include brushed metal trim, sport seats, and a 10-speaker CD audio system.

What Changed:

A four-door version of the GTI compact joins the lineup for 2007. The 4-door shares its 200 hp four-cylinder engine, FWD and choice of six-speed transmissions with the 2-door model. The models are virtually identical in every conceivable option and dimension save for the extra 2 doors.
