Toyota is rapidly approaching world domination in the realm of automobile manufacturers. With a reputation for dependable, fuel-efficient cars, Toyota cars end up at the top of many shopping lists, and for many, a Toyota purchase is an automatic decision. Toyota offers a full-line of vehicles that fill both standard vehicle categories, as well as many niche vehicles like the FJ Cruiser SUV.

Toyota redesigned its Highlander SUV for the 2008 model year. Highlander has added about four inches in length, width and height, which unsurprisingly makes it about the same size as a Honda Pilot. The Highlander retains the three-row seating option and adds a unique middle-row concept that features a small bridging seat that stows in the front center console. All models except the hybrid version feature a 270-bhp 3.5L V6, five-speed automatic and either front or all-wheel drive.

Toyota's largest SUV, the Sequoia is also all new for 2008, with proportions befitting its name. Based on the Tundra, the Sequoia was the first full-sized SUV offered by an Asian manufacturer. The second-generation Sequoia has grown in every conceivable dimension to match its domestic rivals. Powered by either a 4.7L V-8 or 5.7L V-8, the Sequoia boasts tow ratings up to 10,000 pounds. The Sequoia is available in 2WD and 4WD models. Pricing now crosses into $50,000 range.

Land Cruiser is also all new for 2008. Although the wheelbase is the same, this rolling legend is longer and wider than the model it replaces. The big change is under the hood, where a 5.7L V8 has replaced last year's 4.7L V8, boosting horsepower by over 100horsepowerto 381-bhp. The price tag has also jumped to over $63,000.

Avalon, Toyota's flagship sedan, receives some minor styling tweaks and a new six-speed transmission for 2008.

Corolla and Corolla Matrix will be replaced with new models in February. Both models are 2009 model year products.

Performance

For many, the way a car performs is a key criterion for which car to purchase. Our Velocity Index helps determine which vehicles are the best all-around performers taking in to consideration a balance of factors such as acceleration and handling.

What would we drive?

Based on our Velocity Index analysis, the 2008 Toyota Avalon (XL) seems to provide a good trade-off between price and vehicle performance.

Fuel Economy

Fuel economy has long been a key decision factor when buying a new vehicle. While the EPA estimates may accurately predict your mileage with a given vehicle, they are useful for broad comparisons of vehicles. Note that many trucks and large SUVS are too heavy to be required to specify their fuel economy.
