New or Significantly Altered Models

1997 Jeep Wrangler
The jeep Wrangler is significantly updated for 1997. While retaining the same basic body on frame configuration the suspension, body, and interior have been modified. Wrangler now features a new Quadra-Coil suspension that provides more wheel travel than the leaf-spring system it replaces. The exterior has been redone with all body panels replaced except the doors. The front end returns to the round headlights of the Wrangler's predecessors. The interior has been redesigned. It features a new instrument panel, improved ventilation, and a wider rear seat. Wrangler is available in SE, Sport, and Sahara trim levels. Engine choices are limited to either a inline 4 or an inline 6. The engines are mated to either a 5-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmission.

Updated Models

The Cherokee is refined for 1997. Minor exterior changes update the styling. The front end receives a new grille that is more rounded than the previous model. On the sides there are new integrated wheel flares. In the rear there is a new hidden-hinged liftgate. The interior styling has been updated and is now modular in construction to facilitate RHD versions of the Cherokee. Interior changes also include updated door panels and an improved HVAC system.
1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The Grand Cherokee receives only minor refinements this year. The 5.2-litre V8 is now availble with 2WD. A 4.0-litre TLEV engine is available for California customers. The interior receives fit and finish improvements for the carpet. All versions receive a new chip resistant primer coating.
