1997 Ford Escort
The Escort and its sibling the Mercury Tracer have been updated for 1997. The new models receive all-new exterior and interior styling, a revised 2.0-liter engine, upgraded transmissions, and an all-new suspension. The updated powerplant produces 110-hp and 125lb-ft of torque. Platinum-tipped spark-plugs are responsible for a new 100,000 mile tune-up service interval. Escort comes in base and LX trim levels, 4-door sedan and 4-door wagon body styles. A 2-door model will be available mid-year.

1997 Ford Expedition
Ford turns their truck success on a new segment this year with the addtion of the Expedition. The Expedition is a full-size Sport Utility Vehicle with four doors and seating for up to nine. Expedition is offered in 2WD and 4WD models with XLT and Eddie Bauer trim packages. The standard engine is a SOHC 4.6-liter V-6 that produces 215 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque. An optional SOHC 5.4-liter V-8 is available that produces 230hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. Ford claims that the Expedition shares half of its components with the F-series trucks.
1997 Ford F-Series
Although old news, the 1997 F-Series was technically an all new vehicle for 1997. F-150 and F-250 Ford trucks are all-new inside and out. 4x2 and 4x4 models are available in Regular and SuperCab and 4 trim levels. SuperCab models receive a standard passenger side rear door. Engine choices are plentiful: a 4.2-liter V-6 (210 hp/225 lb-ft), 4.6-liter V-8 (220hp/ 290 lb-ft) and an optional 5.4-liter V-8 (235hp/330 lb-ft). All engines can be ordered with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic.

1997 Ford Aspire
The styling of the entry-level Aspire has been updated for 1997. The front end receives a new bumper and an oval-shaped grille. The rear has been enhanced with a new bumper and taillight lens treatment. The final drive ratio on the optional automatic has been changed from 3.63 to 3.4.
1997 Ford Econoline
The versatile Econoline full-size van receives a new family of engine options for 1997, including a V-10. The engines are: a 215-hp/290 lb-ft, 4.6-liter SOHC V-8 , a 235 hp/335 lb-ft, 5.4-liter SOHC V-8, and the 265 hp/411 lb-ft, 6.4-liter V-10. These engines join the 4.2-liter V-6 and 7.3-liter diesel engines. The styling has been updated with changes to the front bumper and grille. The interior receives an all-new instrument panel and upgraded center console.

1997 Ford Aerostar
The Aerostar receives an all-new 5-speed automatic transmission for 1997. This new transmission is available on the 4.0-liter V-6 model, while the 3.0-liter V-6 receives a revised 4-speed automatic. On the inside, the Aerostar receives updated seats and lighting.

1997 Ford Contour
Contour Sport is available as a new trim level for 1997. The package features 15-inch aluminum wheels, special badging, fog lamps, and a tachometer.

For 1997 the Crown Victoria receives steering control upgrades.
1997 Ford Explorer
Explorer adds a new engine and transmission for 1997. A SOHC 4.0-liter V-6 joins the OHV V-6 and 5.0-liter V-8. The new SOHC engine produces 205-hp and 245lb-ft of torque. This is an increase of 45hp over the OHV V-6. Ford is offering a new 5-speed automatic transmission on both V-6 engines. Explorer's equipped with the V-6 engine benefit from a revised Control-Trac system that offers Low/High/Auto modes for operation of the 4-wheel drive.

Mustang is available in three versions: a 150-hp V-6 base model, a 215-hp V-8 GT model, and a 305-hp Cobra model. For 1997 a passive anti-theft system utilizing encoded ignition keys is standard on all three models.

1997 Ford Probe
A GTS appearance package is offered on the Probe for 1997. The package features twin racing stripes that run down the middle of the body, a rear spoiler, and 16-inch chrome wheels.

For 1997, Ranger receives transmission updates. A new five-speed automatic is available with the optional 4.0-liter V-6 engine. The base 4-cylinder and 3.0-liter V-6 engines receive an updated 4-speed automatic option.

Ford added the SHO to the Taurus line in mid-96 selling it in 97 as a 96 model. (Make sense?) The 3.0 Vulcan V-6 has a revised catalytic converter configuration that allows it to be qualified as a Transitional Low Emission Vehicle in California and similar states. The 24-valve Duratec V-6 receives an upgraded powertrain control module.

Round 1 of the battle for four doors is fought in 1997. The Windstar adds a tip/slide driver's seat to provide access to the rear of the van from the driver's side. Round 2 is a longer driver's door for 1998.
