After a short hiatus the Beetle returned for the 2012 model year. Compared to its predecessor, the Beetle grew by some 7 inches in length, 1 inch in wheelbase and almost 4 inches in width. A range of engines will be offered worldwide.
The Passat is all-new for 2012. Compared to the prior model it is about 4 inches longer in wheelbase and overall length. It is about 1 inch wider. The larger proportions allow for a more spacious back seat. Volkswagen is planning three engines for the Passat: a 2.5l inline five-cylinder, a 2.0l turbo diesel four-cylinder, and a 3.6l V6. Three trim levels will be offered S, SE, and SEL.
The all-wheel-drive R version of the Golf/GTI returns for the 2012 model year as the Golf R. The Golf R equips a more powerful version of the 2.0l four-cylinder rated at 256-bhp. All-wheel-drive and six-speed manual are standard equipment. Some trim levels of the GTI receive LED daytime running lights.

The performance-oriented GLI model returns to the Jetta lineup. The Jetta GLI includes an upgraded 200-bhp turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Compared to other Jetta models, the GLI includes four-wheel disc brakes and a different independent rear suspension. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a six-speed dual clutch automated manual is optional.
