Like the Jimmy and Safari, the Sonoma receives new half-shafts for the 1997 model year. The base 2.2-liter engine receives a new starter motor to increase reliability.
Similar to its siblings the Blazer and Bravada, the Jimmy receives a new liftgate that allows only the glass to be raised. A power moonroof option is now available. Half-shafts have been replaced with a new lighter design that allows for the half-shafts to be "plugged" into the differential to help serviceability.
Safari buyers can now order leather seats in the SLT trim level. The starter motor has been replaced with a quieter version. Half-shafts have been redesigned for improved serviceability.
