Like its sibling the Toyota Camry, the Lexus ES300 is all-new for 1997. The new vehicle is 2 inches longer in the wheelbase and 2.4 inches longer in overall length than the previous model. The new body design features a lower (.29 vs. .32) drag coefficient. The output of the 3.0-liter V-6 has been increased to 200 hp. Engine output increases coupled with a 78 pound weight reduction should help improve the performance of the ES300.
The SC coupe has received a minor facelift for 1997. The front end has been updated to include an integrated front spoiler. On the side of the vehicle, mud guards are incorporated into the rocker panels. The rear of the vehicle receives a new rear-spoiler and tail-light lens design. Softer leather seats have been added on the inside.
For 1997, Lexus has added side airbags to the flagship LS400. The airbags are located inside the seat edge as opposed to the door panels as seen on other vehicles.
