The Toyota Matrix is a small five-door hatchback which is closely related to the Corolla. A standard 132-bhp 1.8L I-4 drives the front wheels in the base models; whereas a larger displacement 2.4L four-cylinder rated at 158-bhp is found in the higher S trim level. Introduced in 2009, the second generation Matrix lost its tall crossover wagon styling but still offers an all-wheel-drive model for increased traction. The versatile 5-door body style has a large hatch which provides access to a cargo area finished in a hard durable plastic for utility. At one time, the Matrix was a unique body style, but segment is more robust today and includes uniquely stylish vehicles like the Kia Soul and the more fuel-efficient, all-wheel-drive Impreza.
