This compact Jeep will outrage the faithful, since it is not designed for serious off-road excursions. Based on the same platform as the Dodge Caliber, the Compass offers a 172-bhp 2.4L I-4, FWD or 4WD, and a locking center differential. Transmission choices include a standard 5-speed manual or optional CVT. Outside North America, a 2.0L turbodiesel engine will be available. Standard 17-inch alloy wheels can be upgraded to 18-inch alloy or chrome-clad wheels. A Boston Acoustics audio system features liftgate mounted speakers, ideal for tailgate parties.

The Compass gets all-new instrument panel, center console and door trim for 2009. Changes were made to the engine compartment and floor insulation to reduce noise. Carpet replaces vinyl on the load floor.
