The Toyota Rav4 was one of the first compact SUV offerings on the market. Over time, it has grown considerably. The larger size allows for optional 3-row seating and optional V6 power. The base powertrain is a 166 hp, 2.4L four cylinder with a 4-speed automatic but the 269 hp, V6 model with the 5-speed automatic is the more rewarding model to drive. In all, three trim levels are offered: Base, Sport and Limited in 2WD and 4WD configurations with either 2 or 3 rows of seats. As with other Toyota SUVS, ABS, traction control and stability control are all standard.

A new 2.5L four-cylinder becomes the new base engine. The engine is more powerful with an increase of 13 bhp and 7 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy ratings are also up slightly. The 2009 RAV4 wears a new grille and front bumper. Most models feature a revised rear bumper and new tail lamps. The RAV4 also features a number minor equipment changes.
