As the SUV market matured, one of the last open niches was for small luxury SUVs. Models like the BMW X3 and Acura RDX appeal to buyers that might not have otherwise been shopping the luxury brands. The GLK is Mercedes-Benz entry in this segment. The hard-edged styling is a break from other Mercedes SUVs and the competitive vehicles. The GLK is smaller than other vehicles in the segment with a shorter wheelbase but wider track. Both 2WD (RWD) and AWD drivelines are offered, all powered by a 3.5L V6.

Mercedes enters the expanding market of small luxury SUVs with the GLK. The V6-powered GLK 350 is offered with both RWD and AWD drivelines. The 268-bhp V6 is coupled to a 7-speed automatic, which is unusual for this class.
