Jeep has a two-pronged approach to expand into the entry-level SUV segment. The new Patriot and its twin, the Compass, aim at slightly different customers. While the Compass is primarily an on-road vehicle, the Patriot has the traditional Jeep cues and capabilities that should appeal to a more macho clientele. The sole engine in the USA and Canada is a 172-bhp 2.4L I-4, coupled to a 5-speed manual or two Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT2 or CVT2L). Although the base Patriot is FWD, Jeep has two 4WD drivetrain configurations for customers who want to go off-road. Freedom Drive I is a full-time 4WD system, designed for maximum on-road traction, and light-duty dirt road travel. A center differential lock enhances traction on slippery surfaces. For serious rock crawling, Freedom Drive II should fit the bill. It includes full Trail Rated capability, which means slid plates, 1-inch higher ground clearance, all-terrain tires with full-size spare, and a low-range mode for the CVT2L. A wide array of available options include a vinyl rear cargo surface (Ultra Floor), 17-inch alloy wheels, Boston Acoustics audio system, SIRIUS satellite radio, tire pressure monitoring system, leather seats, portable/rechargeable cargo lamp, and a 115V auxiliary power outlet. All Patriots are equipped with comprehensive safety equipment, which includes Brake Traction Control, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), ABS, side-curtain airbags, and Electronic Roll Mitigation. With its rugged styling and off-road capability, the Jeep Patriot could make a sizable dent in the compact SUV market.
