The original Insight (2000-2006) was the first gasoline/electric hybrid vehicle sold in North America. The goal of the second generation Insight was to bring down the cost of a dedicated hybrid model. The hybrid system used in the Insight may not be as complex as that in a Toyota Prius but the results are similar. By pairing a 1.3L gas engine with a small electric motor, the Insight is able to earn an EPA rating of 41 mpg city, 44 mpg highway. The hybrid system in the Insight can run under electric power, but does so less often than in the Prius. The simplicity pays dividends in terms of weight savings, but more importantly in the price of the vehicle. The Insight has a base price about $5000 less than the Toyota Prius and Honda's own Civic Hybrid. The small five-door offers seating for five and a large useful hatch for cargo. Indicators in the instrumentation provide feedback and guidance on how to drive your hybrid to maximize mileage.
