The long-awaited replacement for the compact Mazda Protégé offers distinctive styling and a more powerful 2.3L engine. The front wheel drive, 4-door sedan is offered in i and s trim levels. The i is powered by a 148hp 2.0L I4 whereas the s includes a 160hp 2.3L I4. Both engines are available with either the standard 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic. The upright style of the five door Mazda3 provides ample headroom and a spacious feeling interior. Alloy wheels and 4 wheel disc brakes are also standard. An optional sports package adds fog lamps, larger wheels, updated front and rear bumpers, and side skirts. Starting at around $16k, the Mazda3 is one of the more inexpenisve ways to get an economical, yet solid and upscale feeling compact car.
