The impending launch of the new 2023 Sequoia signals the end of production of the current model. For the abbreviated 2022 model year, Toyota introduced a Nightshade Edition for the Sequoia, available in 2WD or 4WD. The Sequoia lineup starts with the base SR5, followed by the TRD Sport and Pro, Limited, Platinum, and Nightshade.

We tested a Sequoia 4WD Nightshade Edition ($63,830) that had the Premium Audio and Convenience Package ($1,065) and the floor liners/cargo mats ($373). Including the $1,175 delivery fee added up to $66,443.

A 5.7L V-8 powers all 2022 Sequoias. The all-aluminum V-8 is rated for 381-hp @ 5,600 RPM and 401 lb.-ft. @ 3,600 RPM. A 6-speed automatic sends power to all four wheels via a 2-speed transfer case. EPA fuel consumption ratings are 13/17 MPG (city/hwy.) for both 2WD and 4WD Sequoias. We averaged around 13 MPG in mixed urban and highway driving.

The Sequoia's suspension consists of double wishbones, coil springs, dampers and stabilizer bars for both and rear axles. Rear air suspension and adaptive variable suspension are available on some models. A power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system is geared for 3.71 turns lock-to-lock. Brakes are ventilated discs: 13.9 in. dia. rotors (front) and 13.6 in. dia. rotors (rear). The Nightshade gets 20-in. alloy wheels shod with P275/55R20 Dunlop SP Sport 5000 tires. Curb weight for the 4WD Nightshade is 5,985 lbs. Towing capacity is rated at 7,100 lbs.

Considering the Sequoia's sticker price above $60K, we were surprised by the hard plastic dash and console. Build quality is excellent, but the materials are not as premium as the competition. The front seats are reasonably comfortable, but the flat bolsters lack lateral support. Second-row seats offer ample legroom, yet headroom is restricted for occupants more than 6 ft. tall. The powered folding third row seats are best suited for children or short adults.

Considering its nearly 3-ton curb weight, the Sequoia drives like a much lighter vehicle, aided by its light steering effort and all-independent suspension. The V-8 delivers excellent low and midrange torque, so the Sequoia accelerates rapidly from a stop when lightly loaded. Toyota tuned the suspension for moderate understeer and body roll. The independent rear suspension keeps the rear axle planted so the Sequoia feels solid and stable at highway speeds. Tire and road noise are relatively subdued. In light snow, the Dunlops provide adequate grip, but the tires are better suited for milder climates. The Sequoia's large disc brakes deliver excellent stopping performance and progressive pedal actuation. Despite its 4WD capability, Toyota aimed the Sequoia Nightshade for driving on urban streets and highways, leaving the TRD models for trails and off-road adventures.

Although the new Sequoia is set to arrive in summer 2022, we suspect that some customers may miss the easy torque and pleasing rumble of the V-8 in the current model. The competition from the American brands is only getting stronger, so it's time for a new full-size SUV from Toyota.
