Like other recent auto shows, the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) was relatively subdued, but the NYIAS has always been geared towards the public, instead of being a media extravaganza. Manufacturers with a strong presence in the northeast US such as Mercedes-Benz and Nissan value the NYIAS as an opportunity to reveal their latest vehicles. The new E-Class sedan and coupe made their US debuts in New York, while Nissan brought the 370Z Roadster and Nismo 370Z to the show. BMW showed the X6 M, which is aimed directly at the AMG version of the Mercedes ML SUV. Audi's introduction of the new S4 Cabriolet is just in time for springtime weather. Acura unveiled the midsize ZDX hatchback concept, while at the other end of the spectrum, Scion showed an iQ minicar concept, based on a non-US market Toyota. The new Legacy sedan and Outback wagon from Subaru should expand its presence in the midsize sedan/wagon segment. Hyundai showed the flashy Equus luxury sedan to test its appeal among New Yorkers, but the Nuvis concept probably predicts the future of Hyundai SUVs. From Chrysler came the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, which seems to be a tremendous leap forward in sophistication compared to the current-generation model. Eagerly awaited by its fans, Mazda finally displayed the US-market Mazdaspeed3 sport compact. Despite its somewhat regional flavor, the NYIAS retains its status as one of the most relevant auto shows in the US.
