Saab has not produced a sports car since the petite Sonett of the early 1970's. If the Aero X Concept is any indication of the future, then the wait was worth it. This sleek sports car is a radical change from the almost generic styling of current Saabs. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 2.8L V-6 with 400-bhp, Saab estimates that the AWD Aero X will accelerate from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.9 seconds. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). The Aero X can run on E100 (100% ethanol), derived from plants such as corn. An innovative cockpit design has a clamshell canopy that rises and moves forward to access the passenger compartment. To enhance the airplane motif, the multi-blade alloy wheels resemble jet turbofans. A simple, functional interior features aircraft-inspired gauges and no chrome trim or carpeting. The Aero X is the best-looking Saab in decades, although there are no production plans.
