2018 Ford Focus 5-door

Compact cars are one of the most hotly contested segments in the industry. It takes a combination of style, value and fuel economy to succeed. Redesigned for 2012, the Ford Focus addresses all three with a range of models from the basic S to the high-end Titanium. A standard 160-bhp, 2.0l four cylinder engine is one of the most powerful engines in the segment, yet maintains a respectable EPA rating of 28 MPG city, 38 MPG highway (6-speed AT). The Focus is slightly smaller than some competitive models in the segment but splits the difference in size between the smaller Ford Fiesta, and the larger Ford Fusion. Two body styles are available: a sedan and a five-door hatchback. The basic S and SE have low starting prices, but include common cost cutting items like rear drum brakes and steel wheels with wheel covers. The Focus 5d is also available as an dedicated electric vehicle.

2018 Hyundai Santa Fe

Hyundai replaced its long-running Santa Fe SUV model with two new models for the 2013 model year. The "Santa Fe Sport" matches the proportions of the outgoing model and offers two rows of seating for five passengers. The longer wheelbase model "Santa Fe" adds about four inches of wheelbase and 8.5 inches of overall length to accommodate three rows of seating for up to seven passengers. With three rows of seats the Santa Fe is larger than the Kia Sorento and roughly the same size as the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot. The Santa Fe has more legroom than these models sacrificing a little bit of cargo volume. The standard 3.3l V6 engine has more power than these models but also has a higher fuel economy rating of 19/26 for the front-wheel-drive model. The Santa Fe is offered in two trim levels: GLS and Limited. The Limited model includes all features as standard equipment but only seats six replacing the second row bench seat with two captain's chairs.

2018 Nissan Pathfinder

The long-running Nissan Pathfinder was one of the pioneers of the SUV market. Nissan has reinvented the Pathfinder for the 2013 model year. Like all but the largest SUVs, the Pathfinder is now a FWD-biased crossover with a unibody chassis. With three full-rows of seating the fourth generation Pathfinder is longer and wider than ever before. Compared to similar vehicles, the Pathfinder is smaller than the Chevrolet Traverse, larger than the Honda Pilot and very similar in size to the Ford Explorer. Nissan's 3.5l V6 and CVT transmission are standard on all models. Although the Pathfinder has less power than competitive vehicles, fuel economy is near the top of the class. Nissan offers the Pathfinder in a range of trim levels ranging from around $30,000 to just over $40,000.

Similar in size to the Honda CR-V the Forester has more than enough passenger room and cargo volume to suit a small family. Standard all-wheel-drive adds an extra measure of security in bad weather. The standard four-cylinder boxer engine produces 170-bhp and is now mated to a fuel-efficient CVT transmission. The range also includes a performance-oriented XT model with an additional 80 horsepower and a six-speed automatic transmission. A higher-performance turbocharged model version of the 2.5l four cylinder is included in the Forester XT models. The Forester is well equipped from the Premium trim level and above.

2018 Toyota 4Runner

Toyota has established the 4Runner as a capable midsize SUV, filling a unique niche in the market. In Toyota's lineup, it offers buyers a more ruggedized SUV than the Highlander while offering a size advantage over the FJ Cruiser and a price advantage over the Land Cruiser. The latest model adds a more luxurious interior, but retains its off-road capabilities. A 4.0L V-6 is standard. 4Runners are available in 2WD or part-time 4WD models in the SR5 and Trail grades. A Torsen(R) center differential is standard on the 4WD 4Runner Limited. An available third row seat allows the 4Runner to carry seven.

2018 Toyota Land Cruiser

The legendary Land Cruiser has been part of the Toyota lineup for more than 50 years. Well known for its off-road capability and unsurpassed comfort, the Land Cruiser is the premier SUV in Toyota's lineup. The standard 381-bhp 5.7L V-8 is coupled to a 6-speed automatic, 2-speed transfer case, and adjustable suspension for true rock crawling prowess. The Land Cruiser is sold in just one trim level which includes a leather interior, heated steering wheel, dynamic cruise control and navigation system. The Land Cruiser SUV, while roomy by five-passenger standards includes a third row seat that stores in a bulky upright position.

2018 Toyota Sequoia

The original Sequoia was the first full-size SUV from a Japanese manufacturer. Now in its second generation, the Sequoia is every bit as large as rival models from Ford, General Motors, and Nissan. Unlike the domestics Toyota offers the Sequoia in just one length which splits the difference between the shorter SUVS like the Tahoe and Expedition and longer models like the Suburban and Expedition EL. The Sequoia has three rows of seats for up to 8 people. Sequoia models equip either a 4.6L V-8 or a 5.7L V-8 and a six-speed automatic transmission. A properly optioned Sequoia can tow up to 7400 lbs. Three trim levels are offered ranging in price from $41,000 to around $60,000. Although full-size SUVs have become popular as family haulers, their only real advantage is the higher tow ratings. Full-size SUVs with truck underpinnings are robbed of interior space with the body mounted over the frame. Modern FWD-biased SUVs offer similar interior room with improved maneuverability, cargo capacity and fuel efficiency for far less money.
