2017 Cadillac Escalade

In 1999, GM slapped a Cadillac face on its popular Tahoe/Yukon SUV, creating an ostentatious status symbol in the long tradition of Cadillac. Now in its third generation, the Escalade includes a standard 6.2l V8 engine and upgraded interior to help justify a $20,000 price premium over its siblings. Although full-size SUVs have become popular as family haulers, their only real advantage is higher tow ratings of over 7500 lbs. Full-size SUVs with truck underpinnings are robbed of interior space with the body mounted over the frame. Most buyers would be better served with a crossover SUV such as the GMC Acadia. Many offer similar legroom with improved cargo capacity and fuel efficiency for less money.

2017 Cadillac Escalade ESV

In 1999, GM slapped a Cadillac face on its popular Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon SUVs, creating an ostentatious status symbol in the long tradition of Cadillac. Now in its fourth generation, the Escalade includes a standard 6.2l V8 engine and upgraded interior to help justify a $20,000 price premium over its corporate siblings. Like the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL, the Escalade ESV is a longer wheelbase version of the GMs full-size SUVS adding some 14 inches in length. The added length improves the usability of both the 3rd row seat and the cargo area. Although full-size SUVs have become popular as family haulers, their only real advantage is tow ratings of over 7500 lbs. Full-size SUVs with truck underpinnings are robbed of interior space with the body mounted over the frame. Most buyers would be better served with a crossover SUV such as the GMC Acadia. 2017 Infiniti QX70

What SUV looks like no other, doesn't go off-road, and wants to be a sport car? The Infiniti QX70. Powered by a 325-bhp 3.7L V-6, rapid acceleration is assured. A 7-speed automatic is standard. The QX70 3.7 is offered in RWD or AWD. Infiniti packed the QX70 with a wide array of technology: Intelligent Brake Assist, Lane Departure Warning/Lane Departure Prevention, Intelligent Cruise Control, Distance Control Assist, and Around View Monitor. The optional Sport Package adds Continuous Damping Control, Rear-Active Steer and 21-inch alloy wheels.

2017 Infiniti QX80

In the tradition established by General Motors and Ford, the first generation QX56 was sibling of the Nissan Armada with more luxurious appointments and a higher price tag. The second generation model now named QX80 has shed its ties to the Nissan Armada and Titan becoming a unique vehicle that Infiniti imports to the US market. With a bold, angular front fascia and curved roofline, the QX80 certainly stands out from the pack. A 400-bhp 5.6L V-8 provides enough grunt for towing up to 8500 lbs. Both 2WD and 4WD models are available. The QX80 has the size, power, technology and luxury to compete with the Cadillac Escalade, while undercutting its price by thousands.

2017 Jeep Cherokee

2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a premium five-passenger SUV with sound off-road credentials. Development of the current Grand Cherokee occurred when Chrysler was owned by Daimler-Benz, so it should come as no surprise that it is the most refined and luxurious model to date. With widespread availability of three-row seating in this segment, the Grand Cherokee makes due with two rows of seats and an ample cargo area. Buyers looking for three row seating should investigate the Dodge Durango which is mechanically related to the Grand Cherokee. The base engine is Chrysler's 3.6l V6 engine rated at 290-bhp. An optional 350-bhp, 5.7l Hemi V8 is available on all trim levels. The ultimate Grand Cherokee SRT utilizes Chrysler's 6.4l V8 rated at 470-bhp.

2017 Jeep Patriot

Jeep's robust lineup of SUVs includes overlapping entry-level vehicles. The Patriot and its fraternal twin, the Compass, aim at slightly different customers. While the Compass is primarily an on-road vehicle, the Patriot has the traditional Jeep styling cues and off-road capabilities to appeal to Jeep's traditional clientele. The most common engine is a 172-bhp 2.4L I-4, coupled to either a 5-speed manual or Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT). Although the base Patriot is FWD, Jeep has two 4WD drivetrain configurations for customers who want to go off-road. The base Sport model features an attractive low price, but excludes common features like air conditioning, power windows, power door locks and remote keyless entry. The more reasonably equipped Latitude model is priced from $20,000.

2017 Jeep Wrangler

The iconic Wrangler looks little different at first glance, but the latest generation features a number of important improvements. Jeep has increased the wheelbase and length for some badly needed extra interior room. A 3.6L V-6 is the standard engine. The model lineup includes the Wrangler Sport, Sahara, and Rubicon. Serious rock hoppers should get the Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, which has locking differentials, Active Sway Bar System, and dedicated off-road tires. One often overlooked fact about the Wrangler is that it is one of the least expensive convertibles on the market. Most models include the manual soft top, but the 3-piece hardtop is available for less than $1000.

2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Jeep faithful will be pleased that the Wrangler Unlimited embodies all the traditional Jeep attributes, adding much-needed cargo room and two more doors. The Wrangler Unlimited has a stiffer frame, longer 116-inch wheelbase, and retuned suspension, which should help tame the infamously jittery on-road ride. A 3.6L V-6 couples to a standard 6-speed manual or optional 5-speed automatic. Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is standard. Serious rock hoppers should get the Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, which has locking differentials, Active Sway Bar System, and dedicated off-road tires. One often overlooked fact about the Wrangler is that it is one of the least expensive convertibles on the market.

2017 Nissan Juke

Nissan's robust lineup of small cars in North America includes the unique Juke. The Juke is a tall five-passenger hatchback with optional all-wheel-drive. Because the Juke has some SUV styling traits and optional AWD, Nissan is marketing it as a crossover vehicle. A sophisticated 1.6l four-cylinder engine with direct injection and a turbocharger is standard. With 188-horspower, the small Juke should feel quick. The optional all-wheel-drive system can split the torque between the front and rear axle and between the left and right rear wheels to enhance traction and maneuverability. Juke is offered in several trim levels ranging from $19,000 to $25,000. The closest direct competitor to the Juke is the Mini Countryman.

2017 Nissan Rogue

The Rogue is a compact crossover SUV with seating for up to seven passengers. The Rogue is similar in size to vehicles like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4; however the optional third row seating sets the Rogue apart from most of its competitors. A fuel-efficient 2.5l four-cylinder engine is the only engine offered. Unlike some others in the segment, there is no V6 option. The Rogue is available in S, SV and SL trim levels with either front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. Well-equipped models are priced from $24,000 to over $30,000.

2017 Volkswagen Touareg

The Touareg is Volkswagen's entry in the premium SUV market. Developed in conjunction with the Porsche Cayenne, the Touareg offers a luxurious interior paired with a chassis and drive system that is more than capable off-road as well as on-road. The Touareg starts at around $44,000 for the V6 powered model. A diesel-powered model is priced from $47,000 and adds more torque and improved mileage. On paper, the Touareg has a lot going for it, but its premium pricing places it in competition with models from brands that have more prestige than the one known for the "people's car".

2018 Acura MDX

The MDX has been a popular SUV since its introduction in 2001. The MDX provides a luxury car feel with excellent ride, maneuverability, and a cabin that is roomy and comfortable for up to seven passengers. The MDX is now offered in FWD, AWD, and Sport Hybrid models. Most MDX models equip a 3.5l V6 engine and 9-speed automatic transmission. A newer Sport Hybrid model equips a hybrid gas/electric drivetrain similar to that of the NSX. The Sport Hybrid system consists of a 3.0l V6 engine, 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and three electric motors powering all four wheels. The Acura Advance package adds uncommon features such as adaptive cruise control and a collision mitigation braking system. The Entertainment package adds a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and heated rear seats. With Honda's reliability and high resale values, the MDX is an all-around safe bet.

2018 Acura RDX

The Acura RDX is a smaller five passenger SUV/Crossover that competes with models like the Audi Q5, Cadillac SRX and BMW X3. The second generation RDX switched to V6 power. The 3.5l unit in the RDX is rated at 279-bhp which compares favorably with competitive models. Both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models are offered. A six-speed automatic with paddle selectors is standard. The five-passenger interior has more legroom than others in the segment, but gives up a little bit of cargo volume to bigger and more expensive models like the Lexus RX. The base model has standard power-adjustable leather seats, dual zone climate control, and a 360-watt audio system. The optional technology package adds HID lights, a satellite-linked navigation system and power operated tailgate. The RDX is priced aggressively undercutting competitive models from Cadillac, BMW, and Lexus by thousands of dollars.

2018 Audi Q7

For a company synonymous with all-wheel-drive, Audi was relatively late to the game with its first true SUV. Now in its second-generation the large Q7 has joined by a family of crossover/SUV vehicles. At almost 200-inches in length, the Q7 is larger than similar offerings from BMW, Volvo and Acura. The Q7 has three rows of seating for up to seven-passengers. Engine choices include a 2.0l turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 252-bhp or a supercharged V6 rated at 333-bhp. Audi's quattro AWD is standard. Pricing for the Q7 starts in the low $50,000s.

2018 BMW X4

The X4 is a specialized spin-off of the popular 3-Series sedan. The X4 trades a trunk for fastback styling, a hatchback and higher ride height. With the rear seats up, the interior is similar in size to the sedan, however the hatch and fold-down rear seats offer a larger and more accessible storage area. BMW's xDrive AWD is standard on all models. Powertrain choices include 2.0l four-cylinder (xDrive28i) and a 3.0l inline six (M40i). The X4 is a niche vehicle that will only appeal to someone looking for something different. The 3-Series offers stronger performance credentials and a wider array of powertrain choices.

2018 BMW X5

Arguably the first SUV that put the emphasis on "Sport", the BMW X5 is now in its third generation. The X5 has grown large enough to add an optional third row seat. Engine choices include a inline-6 gas, inline-6 diesel or V-8. Most models are equipped with xDrive AWD. Safety & handling enhancements include Active Roll Stabilization, Dynamic Traction Control, rearview camera, and Adaptive Drive. The X5 is produced in South Carolina.

2018 BMW X6

The BMW is a highly specialized alternative to the X5. BMW stylists replaced the wagon-like backend and third row seat with a sharply raked fastback profile. The result defies categorization. The X6 has the all-wheel-drive and tall stance of an SUV, but little of the utility. Inside there is seating for up to five and a shallow storage area in the hatch. The X6 comes with a couple of different powertrains. Like other BMW vehicles, the X6 has a long list of technological features. Prices start at over $60,000.

Hyundai replaced its long-running Santa Fe SUV model with two new models for the 2013 model year. The "Santa Fe Sport" matches the proportions of the outgoing model and offers two rows of seating for five passengers. The longer wheelbase model "Santa Fe" adds about four inches of wheelbase and 8.5 inches of overall length to accommodate three rows of seating for up to seven passengers. With three rows of seats the Santa Fe is larger than the Kia Sorento and roughly the same size as the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot. The Santa Fe has more legroom than these models sacrificing a little bit of cargo volume. The standard 3.3l V6 engine has more power than these models but also has a higher fuel economy rating of 19/26 for the front-wheel-drive model. The Santa Fe is offered in two trim levels: GLS and Limited. The Limited model includes all features as standard equipment but only seats six replacing the second row bench seat with two captain's chairs.

Powertrain choices on the Santa Fe Sport include two fuel-efficient four-cylinder engines. The base engine is a 190-bhp 2.4l four cylinder engine. The more powerful 2-liter turbocharged engine found on 2.0T models produces 264 horsepower. As a dedicated five passenger vehicle, the Santa Fe Sport is very similar in size to the Ford Edge and the Nissan Murano. These models offer the interior room of a midsize sedan with a large usable hatch. With only four-cylinder engines, the Santa Fe Sport promises strong fuel economy ratings of up to 29 MPG Highway, depending on the model.

With three full-rows of seating the fourth generation Pathfinder is longer and wider than ever before. Compared to similar vehicles, the Pathfinder is smaller than the Chevrolet Traverse, larger than the Honda Pilot and very similar in size to the Ford Explorer. Nissan's 3.5l V6 and CVT transmission are standard on all models. Although the Pathfinder has less power than competitive vehicles, fuel economy is near the top of the class. Similar in size to the Honda CR-V the Forester has more than enough passenger room and cargo volume to suit a small family. Standard all-wheel-drive adds an extra measure of security in bad weather. The standard four-cylinder boxer engine produces 170-bhp and is now mated to a fuel-efficient CVT transmission. The range also includes a performance-oriented XT model with an additional 80 horsepower and a six-speed automatic transmission. A higher-performance turbocharged model version of the 2.5l four cylinder is included in the Forester XT models. The Forester is well equipped from the Premium trim level and above.

2018 Toyota 4Runner

Toyota has established the 4Runner as a capable midsize SUV, filling a unique niche in the market. In Toyota's lineup, it offers buyers a more ruggedized SUV than the Highlander while offering a size advantage over the FJ Cruiser and a price advantage over the Land Cruiser. The latest model adds a more luxurious interior, but retains its off-road capabilities. A 4.0L V-6 is standard. 4Runners are available in 2WD or part-time 4WD models in the SR5 and Trail grades. A Torsen(R) center differential is standard on the 4WD 4Runner Limited. An available third row seat allows the 4Runner to carry seven.

2018 Toyota Sequoia

The original Sequoia was the first full-size SUV from a Japanese manufacturer. Now in its second generation, the Sequoia is every bit as large as rival models from Ford, General Motors, and Nissan. Unlike the domestics Toyota offers the Sequoia in just one length which splits the difference between the shorter SUVS like the Tahoe and Expedition and longer models like the Suburban and Expedition EL. The Sequoia has three rows of seats for up to 8 people. Sequoia models equip either a 4.6L V-8 or a 5.7L V-8 and a six-speed automatic transmission. A properly optioned Sequoia can tow up to 7400 lbs. Three trim levels are offered ranging in price from $41,000 to around $60,000. Although full-size SUVs have become popular as family haulers, their only real advantage is the higher tow ratings. Full-size SUVs with truck underpinnings are robbed of interior space with the body mounted over the frame. Modern FWD-biased SUVs offer similar interior room with improved maneuverability, cargo capacity and fuel efficiency for far less money.
