For drivers that worry about the electric driving range, the i3 is available with a 34-bhp 650cc two-cylinder gasoline range extender engine. With an available six-speed manual transmission, the ATS is clearly aimed at its segment rivals. Like other Cadillac models, the ATS is offered in a range of trim level packages including, Luxury, Performance, and Premium. 2017 Fiat 500

The Fiat 500 has a rich history not unlike that of the Volkswagen Beetle. The original was a small rear-engine car that Fiat produced for almost 20 years. The modern version was introduced in 2007 in Europe and 2011 in America. The diminutive four-passenger 500 is larger than a Smart ForTwo, but smaller than a Toyota Yaris. Fiat offers the 500 in three trim levels ranging in price from $16,000 to over $20,000 with options. All equip a fuel-efficient 1.4l four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels. The performance oriented 500 Abarth adds a turbocharger increasing the power output to 160-bhp. Weighing just 2500 pounds, the Abarth is sure to be a pocket rocket. The 500 is sold through a select number of Chrysler dealerships.

2017 Fiat 500 e

The Fiat 500 has a rich history not unlike that of the Volkswagen Beetle. The original was a small rear-engine car that Fiat produced for almost 20 years. The modern version was introduced in 2007 in Europe and 2011 in America. The diminutive four-passenger 500 is larger than a Smart ForTwo, but smaller than a Toyota Yaris. In 2013, the 500 added a dedicated electric-powered model dubbed the 500e. The 500e equips a 111-bhp electric motor. A 24kWh lithium-ion battery pack gives the 500e an estimated range of 80-100 miles on a charge. The battery pack is rechargeable in less than 4 hours at 240v. The 500e will only be offered in California at launch.

2017 Honda Accord Coupe

For over 35 years, the Honda Accord has been a standout for solid, reliable transportation with good performance, fuel-efficiency and value. The ninth generation Accord adds significant powertrain improvements. The Accord is offered in several trim levels with either a fuel-efficient four-cylinder or V6 engine. Transmission choices now include six speed transmissions and a fuel-efficient CVT on four-cylinder models. All trim levels include common power equipment. Unlike the sedan, the coupe is offered with a six-speed manual on the V6 model.

2017 Lexus RC

The last time Lexus had a sporty coupe was in the late 1990s, when the 2-door SC300/400 was part of its lineup. Neither the SC430 nor the IS convertible that followed were really replacements for the SC hardtop coupes. So Lexus went back to its roots and to design a coupe offering both performance and luxury. Lexus is positioning the RC350 as a luxury coupe, with the F Sport package intended for customers preferring bolder styling and sharper handling. The RC F is the performance flagship in the Lexus lineup, intended to compete against the BMW M4 and Audi S5.

2017 Nissan GT-R

A legend among Japanese supercars, Nissan's GT-R finally made it to the US in 2008. Powered by a twin-turbo 3.8L V-6 coupled to a 6-speed dual-clutch transaxle, the all-wheel drive GT-R is one of the highest performance sport coupes available at any price. Each engine is assembled by hand at Nissan's Yokohama engine plant. The latest iteration of the ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive system varies torque-split from the normal 0:100 to 50:50 (F/R) as road and driving conditions require. Nissan's VDC stability control system and transmission shift mode have three settings controlled by the driver. Brembo disc brakes are at all four wheels, with 6-piston calipers in front and 4-piston calipers at the rear. Dedicated Bridgestone run-flat tires on forged 20-inch alloy wheels are standard: 255/ZRF20 (front) and 285/35ZRF20 (rear). In the cockpit, a complex multi-function display tracks all mechanical and electronic subsystems of the GT-R, and can record vehicle performance data for review. The GT-R was a bargain when first introduced in 2008, but is steadily increasing in price to near supercar levels.

The Subaru BRZ is a small rear-wheel-drive sports car which was jointly developed between Toyota and Subaru. Variants are sold as the Scion FR-S in the US and the Toyota GT86 in other markets. The BRZ is a small coupe with seating for four passengers. Power is provided by a 2.0l horizontally opposed or boxer engine. All models are rear-wheel-drive for performance reasons, which makes the BRZ the only car without standard all-wheel-drive in Subaru's lineup. The closest competitive vehicle is the Nissan 370Z which is similar in size, but has a more powerful V6 engine and a significantly higher price tag.

2018 Audi R8

Audi's mid-engine sports car, the R8, is available in both coupe and convertible (Spyder) forms. Power is provided to all four wheels by a 5.2L V10 engine. The quattro AWD system has a rear-wheel torque bias, but can send torque to the front wheels to improve traction.

2018 Audi TT coupe

The Audi TT was originally defined by its distinctly curved styling. Now in its third generation, the TT wears more traditional styling around its compact dimensions. The TT is offered as both a 2+2 hatchback coupe and a 2 passenger roadster. Most TT models are powered by a 220-bhp turbocharged four-cylinder engine and include a six-speed dual-clutch automated transmission and quattro all-wheel-drive. The higher performance TTS model increases the output of the four-cylinder to 292-bhp. With pricing that overlaps the larger A5 coupe/convertible, the TT is a niche vehicle aimed at a buyer looking for something unique.

2018 BMW 2-Series Coupe

The steady upsizing of BMW's iconic 3-Series left room for BMW to bring its smaller line of cars to the US market. With the introduction of the second generation model in 2014, the 1-Series became the 2-Series to follow BMW's revised naming conventions. When compared to the 4-Series, the 2-Series is about 8 inches shorter, 2 inches narrower and a thousand pounds lighter. Two models are offered with numeric designations tied to the powertrain offerings. The 228i equips a 240-bhp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, where the M235i equips a 3.0l inline six-cylinder engine rated at 322-bhp. Pricing starts at around $33,000 for the 228i, which is about $8000 less than the 428i, but expensive option groups quickly inflate the price. Regardless, the 2-Series coupe is one of the best price / performance values on the market.

2018 BMW 4-Series coupe

The 4-Series (formerly 3-Series) has long been the standard-bearer in one of the industry's most competitive segments. BMW offers an impressive combination of styling, performance, and luxury features for a German luxury coupe priced from the low forties. Offered in RWD and AWD versions, the 3-Series model range includes multiple models with alphanumeric designations corresponding to their drive train. The 428i equips a turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 240-bhp whereas 435i models include the traditional inline-6 rated at 300-bhp. Most BMW models includes a healthy list of driver aids and available technology, but some common items like heated leather seats require hitting the option list.

The Yaris is the smallest and least expensive car sold in the United States as a Toyota. Two body styles are offered: a 3-door hatchback and a 5-door hatchback. The two models are nearly identical except for the two extra doors. A 1.5l four-cylinder engine produces 106 horsepower and is rated at 30/35 (city/highway) by the EPA. The base L trim level includes power door locks, air conditioning, and power windows but omits remote keyless entry. The LE trim level adds these features in addition to an upgraded audio system. The SE trim level (5-door only) adds alloy wheels, a unique grille mesh, and a rear spoiler for an upgraded appearance. In this rapidly expanding segment there are comparably priced alternatives with better fuel economy, more standard equipment and disc brakes.
